Where AAU and Travel Teams Rent Practice Courts

7 min read

A full indoor basketball court set up for team practice with cones and a ball rack on the sideline

Finding practice space is the least interesting part of running a travel programme and reliably one of the most annoying. Coaches are not usually shopping for a court. They are trying to hold a fixed slot, for a fixed group, for a whole season, without it collapsing in December.

The options around Columbia differ less on price than on how much control they hand over, which is the thing that actually matters once a season is underway.

The pattern is the same one that runs through this whole market: the cheapest floors are attached to organisations whose main business is something else, so their hours are somebody's office hours and their calendar has a season of its own.

The school gym problem

School gyms are the obvious answer and they work well for about half the year. Richland Two gyms are listed through Facilitron, which needs an account before it shows a rate, and approval before you get a date.

From November the school's own teams have first claim, which is entirely reasonable and completely incompatible with a travel programme that needs the same Tuesday evening every week. Coaches who rely on school space tend to discover this in the first week of the season rather than in October.

Public recreation centres

Richland County Recreation runs dozens of sites and several have a gymnasium. Rates are not published and rentals go through the department, so it starts with a phone call. For a programme on a tight budget with a flexible schedule this is the sensible first move, and the numbers at the end of it are usually the lowest you will find with a roof.

Seven Oaks Park in Irmo publishes $60 an hour for the full floor, which is a useful anchor in a market where almost nobody states a figure. Providence Park has two courts and runs its own leagues, so it understands team bookings, but asks you to call for rates.

Private hourly courts

This is where our own offer sits, and it is worth being precise about what it is and is not.

It is three half courts in Northeast Columbia, available 24 hours by appointment, with automated entry. For a coach that translates into two specific things: a 6am session before school is genuinely bookable, and so is a 9pm one after everybody else has finished work. Neither requires anybody to be on site to let you in.

What it is not is the cheapest option on this page. A public centre will cost a programme less per hour, and if your schedule is flexible enough to use one you probably should.

Players here book a half court at $30. Coaches and trainers book the entire floor, which keeps a paid session from running into somebody else's hour. The full-court rate is not published, because it has not been confirmed and a made-up number would be worse than asking you to ring. That is a quick conversation, and a standing weekly slot is worth raising in the same call.

The friction nobody warns a coach about

Season timing beats everything

Space is not scarce in September and is scarce in December. A programme that sorts its floor in early autumn gets the slot it wants; one that starts looking in November takes what is left, which is usually the wrong end of the evening.

A standing booking is a conversation, not a transaction

Every operator here will talk about a recurring slot and almost none of them expose it as a button. Ask directly, early, and get it confirmed in writing, whatever the route.

Automated entry cuts both ways

No staff means no restrictions on the hour, and it also means nobody to sort out a problem at 6am. Whoever opens up needs the app on their phone. For a team that means deciding in advance which adult that is, rather than assuming.

Parents need the detail in writing

An unusual hour or an unfamiliar building generates more questions than a school gym does. Address, hour, door arrangement, and who is responsible, sent once before the first session, saves a great many messages later.

How much floor a session actually needs

Coaches routinely book more or less space than the session calls for, and both are expensive in different ways.

Small group skill work, shooting, ball handling and individual development all fit a half court comfortably. Four to six players on one end is a productive session and booking the full floor for it is paying for a hoop nobody touches.

Team practice with anything running end to end needs the whole floor. Transition work, full-court press, conditioning and any scrimmage are all full-court by definition. Trying to run them on a half is the version of this mistake that wastes the session rather than the money.

A squad of twelve splitting into stations is the case where three separate half courts genuinely changes what is possible, because you can run three groups without them interfering with each other.

The conversation worth having up front

Whichever route you take, get these five things settled before the first session rather than in week three.

  • The exact recurring slot, day and hour, and how many weeks it is held for.
  • The rate, and whether it changes for a standing booking.
  • What happens over the holidays, since school terms and public holidays remove weeks from a season without much warning.
  • Who has access, and whether that is one named adult or several.
  • Cancellation, both ways, and how much notice each side needs.

Matching the option to the programme

  • Tight budget, flexible schedule. County or city recreation, and start the call early.
  • Need more than one court at once. Providence Park.
  • West of the river. Seven Oaks, and you will know the rate before you commit.
  • Fixed weekly slot at an hour nobody else sells. That is what a private court with automated entry is for.
  • Small group skill work rather than team practice. A half court at $30 covers it and can be booked without any conversation at all.

Before your season starts

Work out how many hours a week you genuinely need, at which times, and for how many weeks. Then have one conversation with each operator that could plausibly cover it. Coaches who do that in September have practice space sorted; coaches who do it in November have a problem.

If the hours you need are the awkward ones, tell us what you are trying to run and we will give you a straight answer on the floor and the rate. If you only need a half court for small group work, you can see what is free and book it without speaking to anybody.

Questions people ask

Where can an AAU team practise in Columbia?
School gyms, county and city recreation centres, private multi-court complexes, and private hourly courts. Each trades price against how much control you get over the schedule.
Do we need the full court for team practice?
Usually yes. Anything running end to end, any scrimmage, and most conditioning needs the whole floor. A half court is enough for small group skill work.
How much does a full court cost?
It varies and much of the market does not publish it. Seven Oaks in Irmo publishes $60 an hour. At Max Speed Elite the full-court rate is not published, so it is worth a quick call rather than a guess.
Can we book the same slot every week?
Most operators will discuss a standing booking, and it is the right conversation to have before the season rather than during it. Ask early, because the good evening hours go first.
When should we lock in practice space?
Before November if you want winter evenings. Once school seasons begin, school gyms go to school teams and everything else tightens behind them.
