Where to Play Indoor Basketball in Columbia, SC

8 min read

Players on the indoor court at Max Speed Elite in Columbia, South Carolina, with both hoops in view

Finding an outdoor hoop in Columbia is easy. Finding an indoor floor you can count on, at an hour that suits you, is a different problem entirely. The rim is wet, the rec centre has a programme running, the gym you belong to has one court and six people waiting on it.

This is a straight list of the indoor options around Columbia, what each one costs where the operator publishes a figure, and who each is genuinely for. Everything here was checked on the venue's own website in September 2026.

Two things stand out once it is laid out like that. The first is how few operators publish a price at all. The second is that the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive is smaller than you would expect, so the real difference between these venues is not cost. It is whether you can get in when you actually want to play.

1. Max Speed Elite, Northeast Columbia

Three private half courts on Sparkleberry Lane Extension, rented in one-hour blocks at $30 an hour. Players book one of the half courts; trainers and coaches book the full floor.

The part that matters most is the access model. Booking and entry both run through an app, so there is no front desk and nobody has to be on site to unlock a door. That is what makes a 5am or an 11pm slot an ordinary booking here rather than a special favour. There is no membership and no joining fee, so an occasional player pays for the hours they use and nothing else.

Worth knowing: because entry is by app, you need it installed before you arrive. There is nobody at the building to sort it out for you.

2. Providence Park Sports Complex

A double gym on Anders Drive that converts to two basketball courts or three volleyball courts, and the clearest like-for-like private competitor in the area. It publishes $35 an hour for a half court and $65 for the full space, and it also runs tournaments, cheer, dance and coaching.

If you need more than one court at once, or you are putting on something with spectators, this is the more natural fit. For one player wanting one hour, it is a larger room than you need.

3. Seven Oaks Park, Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission

On Leisure Lane, Seven Oaks has a double gym with two regulation courts plus a single gym, and publishes $60 for a full court and $35 for a half. It is a genuinely good facility.

The catch for anyone in Northeast Columbia is simply the map. Seven Oaks sits on the opposite side of the city, so it is a real drive from Sandhills or Lake Carolina, and rec-commission bookings work around the commission's own programming.

4. Tri-City Leisure Center, West Columbia

The cheapest published rate in the area by a distance. West Columbia Parks and Recreation lists a half court from $5 an hour, and the centre also hosts an indoor volleyball league on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

Two caveats. It is about 16 miles from Northeast Columbia, which is past the point where a one-hour session is worth the round trip for most people. And a public leisure centre's availability is shaped by its own league and programme calendar, so the hour you want is not always the hour on offer.

5. Jeep Rogers Family YMCA, Lake Carolina

The closest YMCA branch to Northeast Columbia, on Lake Carolina Drive, with a full-size gymnasium and both youth and adult basketball programmes. The Columbia YMCA runs adult open play across its branches.

The Y operates on membership rather than hourly hire, and it does not publish a per-hour court rate. If your family already uses the Y, this is convenient and effectively free at the point of use. If you are not a member, joining to get a handful of hours a month rarely adds up.

6. Richland Two school gymnasiums

Richland School District Two rents its gymnasiums through a facilities marketplace, covering schools across Blythewood and Northeast Columbia. There is no published flat rate, so every booking is a request and a quote.

For a team with a season to plan and a committee to approve it, this works. For a player who wants Thursday at seven, the process is heavier than the booking.

7. Richland County Recreation Commission

The commission runs 41 sites across the county, including gyms at Blythewood Park, Killian Park and Trenholm Park, and it is the main provider of neighbourhood youth basketball in this part of Richland County. Rentals are arranged by phone and rates are not published online.

This is the right route for community programmes and youth leagues. It is not really built around individual hourly hire.

Where this gets difficult

The honest problem with indoor basketball in Columbia is not that there is nowhere to play. It is that most of the floors are attached to something else: a membership you have to hold, a programme you have to join, or an approval process you have to start weeks out. The supply looks larger on a map than it feels when you are trying to book Wednesday evening.

The second difficulty is hours. Almost every venue on this list is bound by when the building is staffed, which means the hours that suit shift workers, students without a car, and trainers whose athletes are only free before school are exactly the hours nothing is open.

So the practical question is not "where is there a court" but "which of these will actually let me in, at the hour I am free, without joining something first". For most people in Northeast Columbia the honest answer is a short list, and it gets shorter the further your free hour sits from nine to five.

Picking one

If you want a specific hour and you want it to be yours, book an hourly private court. If you are running an event or need more than one floor, Providence Park is the better room. If you are already a Y family, use the Y. If price is the only thing that matters and the drive does not bother you, Tri-City is the cheapest published option in the area.

And if the hour you can actually train is six in the morning or ten at night, the list narrows to the places that do not depend on someone being at a desk to let you in.

That is the category Max Speed Elite sits in. Three half courts on Sparkleberry Lane Extension at $30 an hour, bookable at any hour through an app that is also the door key. There is more on how round-the-clock access works, what is on the pricing page, and a fuller piece on playing late at night in Columbia if the clock is your real constraint. When you know the hour you want, book it here.

Questions people ask

Can you just turn up and play indoors in Columbia?
Rarely. Most indoor floors here are either membership gyms, rec centres running a scheduled programme, or school gyms hired by the hour. A drop-in run with no booking and no membership is the exception, not the rule, which is why booking an hour is usually the faster route.
What is the cheapest indoor court in the Columbia area?
Tri-City Leisure Center in West Columbia publishes the lowest rate of the venues checked. It is a public facility, so availability is built around its own programmes and leagues, and it is roughly 16 miles from Northeast Columbia.
Do I need a membership to play indoors?
At the YMCA branches, yes. At the hourly-rental facilities, no. That is the main practical difference between the two groups in the table above.
Which venues are actually in Northeast Columbia?
Max Speed Elite on Sparkleberry Lane Extension and the Jeep Rogers Family YMCA on Lake Carolina Drive are the two closest to the Sandhills, Lake Carolina, Spring Valley and Pontiac area. Providence Park is a short drive across toward Farrow Road.
How far ahead should I book?
Weekday evenings and weekend mornings go first almost everywhere. If you want a specific hour on a Tuesday night, look at least a few days out. Early mornings and late nights are usually wide open.
